The YHA Cross-country Ski Club is a recreational trail and back-country ski touring club based in Melbourne, Australia.
The Club's purpose is to provide opportunities for people to join in social cross-country skiing events, whether they are beginners or more experienced. As a skiing focused group, we are limited by the snow season and amount of snow in the Victorian alps. But we do hold other social events outside the snow season.
The Club is affiliated with the Youth Hostels Association of Australia, a not-for-profit organisation with members of all ages. We are part of YHA Activities which is dedicated to the pursuit of activities such as bushwalking, cycling, canoeing, and cross-country skiing. Our club includes members with a range of ages.
Booking on to club events is currently handled via our Meetup site. We also post some brief trip notices, reports and photos to our Facebook page.
The YHA Cross-country Ski Club is not a commercial enterprise - we attempt to keep costs (eg for accommodation) to a minimum, and successful trips depend on participants' co-operation and contribution.

First trip of the season! We’ll be staying at a lodge in Mt Hotham. If we’re lucky, there’ll be enough snow for skiing; otherwise, we’ll head out for one or two medium-grade hikes. Evening activities may include a murder mystery game, relaxing in the spa, swapping ski tips, or similar. Potluck dinner on Saturday.
**Due to unpredictable snow conditions early in the season, this activity may become a hike.
Level: Beginner to Advanced

Our annual Beginners Weekend provides an opportunity for those new to cross country skiing to try it out, with experienced skiers in the club providing guidance over the two days. We'll let you know what sort of clothes to bring, what sort of gear to hire and where to hire it, and how to use your skis on the groomed trails of Falls Creek. We'll need some volunteer drivers but will let you know about chain hire and how to get there.
People who have previously cross country skied are also welcome. Longer day tours for experienced skiers are likely to be run.
Level: All abilities welcome — No experience needed.

Activities will be determined at the start of each day over this week, potentially involving touring the groomed cross country trails of Mt Hotham or Dinner Plain, back country touring (depending on snow conditions), improving skills on the downhill runs, or just enjoying the lodge and beautiful alpine environs.
Level: Beginner to Advanced.
Other Potential Trips
Depending on snow conditions and leader availability, day ski trips to areas such as Lake Mountain, Mt Stirling or Mt St Gwinear are possible during the winter season. These trips usually need to be organised at short notice given the likelihood of rapidly changing snow cover. If such a trip is possible, it will be added to the club's Meetup site. A late season weekend at Mt Hotham may be held. Other trips in the past have included accommodated events at Jindabyne for skiing at Perisher and snow camping trips on the Bogong High Plains.
